No, seriously, may I please please pretty please pet your DOG?
I love dogs!
I grew up always having a dog – Brittany Spaniel, my dad’s hunting dog was first. Then cam Samantha, the most beautiful fluffy white bear, Samoyed. My parents surprised me and my two brothers with her when I was in first grade. She saw me all the way through high school. We were totally BFF’s.
I went off to college, several of them as you can read more about here. My parents got a few Labrador Retrievers over time whom I always loved to snuggle with when I came home to visit. Then I finally got my own dog with my boyfriend in 2003. Guess what kind of puppy? A Samoyed, of course – we named her Mieszka which apparently means “bear” in Czech… maybe don’t fact check me on that one, though.
Mieszka was my unconditional friend – just as dogs should be. She really loved me no matter what. She saw me and that boyfriend eventually get married, moved homes several times, try a bunch of science to get pregnant, never get pregnant, and was there for me to cry on through a “let’s try to be amicable” but bitter, heart-wrenching divorce. She kept me going when life got tough. She let me be emotional and was always there with her “Sammy smile” to give me hope.
Single life brought a few more living changes. Mieszka and I got to try modern apartment living in downtown Minneapolis and then move on to a sublet condo in Bloomington. She had to learn to take elevators to go outside without fenced in yard freedom anymore. She put up with me!
Luckily, Mieszka got two more homes with a backdoor grassy yard before she had to leave me in 2018. I married my “old flame” in 2015 and he knew my dog was part of the package from the start.
I lasted a whole two weeks before getting another dog. We adopted a mixed breed from the Animal Humane Society. Josie, my little superhero, is the best. She’s healed the hold in my heart that Mieszka left and loves snuggling ALL.THE.TIME. She always has to be touching. Never not touching!
I love it and I love her.
