Clean Beauty: Is Your Skincare & Makeup Safe?

About two years ago I started gradually making the “switch to safer” in my skincare and beauty routines. I was introduced to a company who has the strictest standards for ingredients in their products by a friend. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first, after all, we all have our favorite face wash, moisturizer, and eye cream, right? Same with our go-to lip gloss and eyeliner, of course!

I wanted to support my friend’s new direct sales venture so I tried what she referred to as their best selling “miracle in a bottle” overnight peel. I ordered from her launch party and anxiously waited for my happy mail to arrive. I then researched the company more, Beautycounter, and found out theat they are a b-corp, have the gold standard requirements for sourcing clean ingredients in their products and also do a ton of legislative work to fight for safer beauty. It was astonishing to learn that the last time our government passed a law surrounding harmful or toxic stuff in our daily routine products was in 1938 – that’s over 80 years ago, friends! I also realized that many brands “greenwash” their labeling as organic or natural when that’s not necessarily true. I started looking at labels on everything I was using and saw “parfum” or “fragrance” on almost everything I trusted. Take note, friends, these aforementioned “ingredients” are often a cover for a plethora of other harmful, unhealthy things that could cause cancer, infertility, and disrupt hormones.

Not. Cool.

My Overnight Resurfacing Peel arrived within a few days and I gently applied after my reliable cleanser and toner. I applied my dermatologist approved moisturizer after and went to bed. I woke up with the BEST skin ever. I’m not kidding. It was shocking how good my skin looked when I woke up, how soft if felt, how my acne-prone skin had calmed. I quickly read the instructions again to see often I could use it. Two-three times a week at night – okay, perfect! I then had to immediately see what else this safer beauty brand offered and decided to try a tinted moisturizer with SPF, face wash, daily moisturizer, eye makeup remover, and the breakout spot treatment. All were equally impressive – my skin started feeling less bumpy, more even toned, and the Dew Skin was way more balanced than my old favorite brand.

I’ll definitely highlight more on the company’s Never List over time since I believe learning is key. But, I need to close right now with: My skin is virtually breakout free, my dark spots have lightened dramatically, and my wrinkles are kept at bay. I couldn’t be happier as a girl who has struggled with bad skin since middle school!

I have just recently become more concerned with the toxic chemicals in my skin care products. Like you, I’m hesitant. I have my reliables, money needed to spend to redo my whole supply…and the list goes on. You make me want to bite the bullet and do what’s good for my skin! Thank you for the information!
